I was extremely saddened in the number of GOP candidates willing to advocate and even champion the use of waterboarding to get information out of terror suspects. If you have to split hairs about what is and isn’t torture, you’re missing the point – we should make it our goal to be above reproach in our treatment of prisoners.
I am only a little bit of the way into “The Black Banners”, the memoir of an FBI counter-terrorism suspect and interrogator, but my sense is that he agrees – the best way to get reliable information is by playing on the psychology of suspects, not beating them into submission.
I was proud to see this from Jon McCain: If a guy tells you something is torture, and that guy has actually BEEN tortured by people who did much worse than waterboarding, then it’s time for you to shut up. Doubly so if that guy is a senior Senator in your own party. I have no sympathy for the terrorists – but we are better than this as a nation. We can fight the war on terror without sinking to this level.
