This Atlantic article makes the case for Ohio Senator Rob Portman for Romney’s VP:
- Romney likes and respects Portman.
- Portman wants the job.
- Portman is vetted, more so than any other potential pick.
- Portman is ready for the job and, more importantly, primed for the obligations that will fall upon Romney if he’s elected.
- Portman is to Romney what Al Gore was to Bill Clinton.
(The article has explanation of each bullet point, I just kept the main point of each)
Those are mostly convincing points, but I still think that Romney needs someone with strong and recognizable Tea Party “street cred.” In particular now that the nomination fight has been so grueling, he will want to use his VP pick to re-energize and show that all of that is behind a “united party.” That probably means a Tea Partier, and shoring up the South is a must-have for Romney’s VP choice.
Portman may be Al Gore – but Romney is no Bill Clinton.
